People ask me why do insurance companies like hip roofs instead of Gable roofs? The answer is simple hip roofs are more stable than Gable roofs because all four sides slope downwards. Hip roofs have less uplift pressure from wind during a storm because all four corners are sloped downwards so the wind has a harder time catching a section to lift. People sometimes forget the biggest protection of your home is your roof so in recent years more people are leaning towards hip roofs to help with the wind mitigation during storms. The other thing you should consider when putting a new roof on is a secondary water-resistant barrier is type of material between the shingles and the roof decking to help water intrusion if you end up with a damaged or missing shingle or two. Secondary water protection on a roof could also get you additional insurance credits.
